Tony Gilroy Didn’t Want to Make Andor — Secretly Hoped COVID Would Shut It Down: “What Have I Done With My Life?”

It’s one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the Star Wars universe. It has near-perfect scores, deep political themes, and writing that actually respects your intelligence. But here’s the twist: Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy didn’t even want to do it. In fact, he quietly wished the whole thing would collapse under the weight of a global pandemic.

On an episode of the Scriptnotes podcast with Craig Mazin and John August, Gilroy candidly admitted that taking on Andor filled him with dread from day one. Not the kind of theatrical "oh no, what have I gotten into?" dread — more the deep, slow-burning existential regret kind.

“Every morning I woke up thinking, ‘What have I done? I’ve ruined my life… I’ve dragged all these people into this… this mess,’” Gilroy recalled. “When the pandemic hit, and people started calling to say, ‘Hey, we might still go ahead,’ I wasn’t relieved. I was bummed. I had this horrible pride that at least I still had a job, but I was making it while full of doubt.”

That’s right — Andor, the one Star Wars series praised for actually having something to say, was born from one man’s midlife crisis during a global catastrophe. And yet, somehow, it became what many fans and critics now call the best thing to come out of the galaxy far, far away.

Only later, during filming, did Gilroy start to think maybe things weren’t a total disaster: “Once we got on set, I started thinking, ‘Huh… this might not be awful.’” Glowing endorsement.

Still, with Andor Season 1 sitting at an astronomical 96–99% on Rotten Tomatoes and widely regarded as the franchise’s most intelligent installment — well, the bar wasn’t that high to begin with — it’s fair to say Gilroy eventually found some peace with it all.

“I don’t think I’ll ever work on something this important again,” he admitted, sounding equal parts satisfied and crushed under the weight of his own achievement. “This is the most significant thing I’ve ever done. The imagination, the labor, how much better I became as a writer, how much I learned… and the scale of the themes. It changed me.”

And to think, he just wanted to get out of it.

The irony? Andor is also one of the most expensive projects in Star Wars history, with a reported $645 million price tag (and that’s just counting both seasons — final numbers may break hyperspace). That’s more than The Last Jedi. More than The Rise of Skywalker. And more, evidently, than Gilroy’s emotional bandwidth could handle at the time.

Set as a prequel to Rogue One, Andor follows the journey of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) — once a petty thief, later a rebel hero — as he stumbles toward his tragic destiny. Alongside Luna, the cast includes Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen Rael, Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, Denise Gough as Dedra Meero, Kyle Soller as Syril Karn, and Adria Arjona as Bix Caleen. Season 2 even welcomes back Rogue One alums Ben Mendelsohn (Director Krennic) and Alan Tudyk (K-2SO).

Season 2 began streaming on Disney+ on April 22, and will unfold in four arcs (three episodes each) through May 13.

Whether Gilroy has emotionally recovered by then... is another story entirely.
