Elphaba & Glinda Get New Songs in Wicked: For Good — But Madame Morrible Deserved One Too

Spread the love

Let’s be real: if you’re going to make a sequel to a musical that already has two of the most iconic songs in Broadway history (“Defying Gravity” , anyone?), you better bring more than just sequins and sparkles.

And guess what? Wicked: For Good is doing exactly that — giving both Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) new original songs to explore their emotional journeys beyond the stage version.

But while fans are hyped for these new tracks, one character seems to have been left out of the chorus: Madame Morrible , played by none other than Michelle Yeoh — who could’ve used a villain ballad so dramatic it would make Maleficent cry into her own cape.

🧙‍♀️ What’s New With Elphaba and Glinda?

In case you forgot where we left off after Wicked (2024), here’s a refresher:

  • Elphaba was flying off into the sunset with a black hat, green skin, and zero trust in governments.
  • Glinda was standing there in pink, trying not to cry while being promoted to “Good Witch” status.

Now comes Part 2 : Wicked: For Good , which promises to dig deeper into both characters’ psyches — through new songs written by Stephen Schwartz , the genius behind “Popular” , “For Good” , and yes — “Defying Gravity.”

Here’s what we know:

  • Elphaba gets a new solo that dives into her life as the Wicked Witch of the West — because apparently, even witches need therapy.
  • Glinda gets her own anthem about officially becoming “the good one” — which sounds like a crisis of conscience waiting to happen.

These additions are perfect — they give us more depth , emotional payoff , and another excuse for Cynthia and Ariana to belt high notes that shatter glass and hearts alike.

👑 But Wait… Where’s Morrible’s Song?

While Elphaba and Glinda get their spotlight (as they should), it’s hard not to notice someone missing from the musical lineup: Madame Morrible .

Yes, she already has “The Wizard and I” and a few lines in “Thank Goodness You’re Kind” , but come on — this is Michelle Yeoh we’re talking about. The woman won an Oscar for playing a multiverse-hopping laundromat owner. Now she’s playing a manipulative sorceress who basically invented propaganda in Oz.

We deserve a villain ballad . We deserve a Disney-style “Poor Unfortunate Souls” or “Mother Knows Best.” We deserve to hear how she clawed her way to the top and why she decided that oppressing animals was a fair trade for power.

Because let’s face it — right now, Morrible is pulling the strings behind the Wizard’s regime. And yet, we don’t even get a song about her rise? That’s like giving Thanos a motivational speech instead of “The Soul of Thanos.”

🎭 Why Madame Morrible Needs Her Own Power Ballad

Morrible isn’t just a background schemer. She’s a master manipulator, a PR wizard, and possibly smarter than the Wizard himself (no small feat).

Her story deserves a song that answers questions like:

  • Why did she choose to side with the Wizard?
  • What made her turn against Elphaba?
  • Was she once idealistic like Glinda… and then got corrupted?

And honestly, a solo number would’ve helped explain all that without needing three scenes of exposition.

Imagine this: 🎶 A dark, theatrical solo where Morrible reveals her backstory over candlelight and a mirror that shows her younger self.
🎶 Lyrics about climbing the ranks, losing friends, and selling out for influence.
🎶 A chorus that echoes: “I’m only bad because I learned the game.”

That’s not just a song. That’s a legacy moment.

🗣️ Michelle Yeoh Is a Legend — But Not Exactly a Singer

Look, we love Michelle Yeoh. She can do anything: fight, act, win Oscars, look stunning in a gown, and still manage to sound like she’s narrating your entire life choices.

But singing? That wasn’t really part of the plan.

According to reports, Yeoh thought it would be “embarrassing as hell” to sing in the movie — and even underwent vocal training just to meet the minimal requirements.

So yeah, Jon M. Chu probably knew what he was getting into when he cast her. He wanted a commanding presence, not necessarily a Broadway belter.

Still…

Would it have killed them to give her a short but powerful solo? Like Cate Blanchett’s “Song of the Lonely Mountain” vibe, but with more political intrigue?

🤔 Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Side Character

Wicked: For Good is shaping up to be a worthy sequel — expanding on Elphaba and Glinda’s arcs, deepening their inner conflicts, and probably making us cry at least twice.

But in a world where even Cats gave Judi Dench a tragic backstory ballad, leaving Madame Morrible without a proper musical moment feels like a missed opportunity.

She’s not just a mentor anymore. She’s the real puppetmaster of Oz — and she deserved a damn song to prove it.
