Get ready to hear “My Precious” on the big screen once again — because Warner Bros. just announced that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum , the long-rumored film starring and directed by Andy Serkis, will finally hit theaters on December 17, 2027 .
That’s right — just in time for Christmas, which means parents everywhere can explain to their confused kids why a bald CGI creature is sobbing over a ring while they try to open presents.
This time around, we’re diving deep into the twisted mind of Golllum himself — yes, both halves of him. The story takes place between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring , when Bilbo was already chilling in Rivendell and Frodo was still too young to carry anything heavier than a backpack.
According to co-writer and producer Philippa Boyens:
“This is a unique fragment of a massive saga — told through the eyes of an incredible character. Audiences will see what it truly means to be Gollum: a victim, a monster, and a desperate seeker of the Ring.”
So basically, think of it as Taxi Driver meets Lord of the Rings , with more hissing and fewer mirrors.
Directing duties go to none other than Andy Serkis , who also reprises his legendary role as everyone’s favorite split-personality swamp-dweller.
And if you thought Peter Jackson had retired to sip wine in New Zealand forever, guess again. He, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are back as producers — ensuring this new film feels like a warm hug from your ancient wizard uncle who smells like pipe smoke and nostalgia.
In short: expect sweeping landscapes, dramatic close-ups of hands reaching for shiny things, and at least one scene where someone cries over a pastry.
Because apparently, Tolkien fans don’t celebrate holidays without watching something epic happen to hobbits. All six previous LOTR and Hobbit films premiered in December — and together, they made nearly $3 billion at the box office. So yeah, Warner Bros. isn’t messing with success.
Let the nostalgia flow.
