Forget superheroes and space battles — the real cinematic showdown of the year is happening on felt , with cue sticks in hand. And no, we’re not talking about a new Fast & Furious spin-off called “Fast & Billiards.” This time it’s serious. Well… as serious as a movie can be when Robert De Niro plays a pool hustler who mentors a teenage prodigy played by Jenna Ortega.
The film, titled Shutout , is set to make waves at this year’s Cannes Film Market — yes, that glamorous place where people sell movies they haven’t finished making yet.
Directed by David O. Russell (of American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook fame), Shutout promises all the drama you’d expect from a filmmaker who once made Bradley Cooper scream into a mirror and got an Oscar nomination for it.
At the heart of the story is Jake Kedjen (played by De Niro), a washed-up pool shark who hasn’t seen sunlight since the 1980s. He lives in backrooms thick with cigar smoke, surrounded by half-empty whiskey bottles and stories he’s probably embellished over the years. Basically, he’s the human equivalent of a vintage jukebox — cool, but slightly broken.
Just when Jake is about to hang up his cue stick for good, he meets Mia (Jenna Ortega), a fiery young talent with more hustle than a Times Square magician. She reignites his passion, and soon enough, the two are diving headfirst into the high-stakes world of underground billiards — where the bets are wild, the opponents are dangerous, and the only thing riskier than the game is the company you keep.
But here’s the twist: as Mia gets better, the big question looms — will she stay loyal to her mentor, or will she pull a classic Hollywood move and betray him while doing it with style?
This isn’t De Niro’s first rodeo with Russell — remember Silver Linings Playbook , where he played a superstitious bookie dad? That role even scored him another Oscar nomination. Clearly, these two together are cinematic kryptonite for Academy voters.
As for Jenna Ortega — fresh off her success in Wednesday and Scream — she’s proving she’s not just a scream queen. With Shutout , she’s aiming to show she can handle complex drama, emotional depth, and maybe even some slow-motion pool shots.
